$23M Senior Housing Project Breaks Ground in Thomasville

An affordable senior housing project broke ground in Thomasville this month. The project will provide housing for seniors in Thomasville and is a public-private partnership supported by government funding.

Historic Campus Set for Major Transformation

Construction has begun on the Douglass School Senior Apartments which will transform the site into a 52-unit housing project. The project broke ground on June 1.

The project is being developed by Tapestry Development Group in partnership with the Thomasville Community Development Corporation. It will be available to residents earning between 50% and 80% of the area’s median income. The company aims to preserve the historic character of the former school while providing housing for seniors. The groundbreaking was attended by local, state, and federal officials to show support for the project.

According to Tapestry Development Group President Jon Toppen, the project will help meet the need for housing in the area. It will honor the site’s history while providing affordable housing to seniors.

Project Details

The Douglass School Senior Apartments project is valued at $23 million. It is for adults aged 55 and older and will feature 52 affordable apartments. The project is financed through multiple sources. This includes low-income housing tax credits, historic preservation tax credits, and others.

Laura Myers, VP, J.P. Morgan Community Development Banking, said the company is proud to help finance the project. She added that this method of preserving the historic campus will increase access to housing. This will also benefit the community for years to come.

Gideon Construction will carry out the construction. It is expected to be completed in about 15 months. The project is part of Tapestry Development Group’s focus on developing and preserving affordable housing across Georgia and the Southeast.

The Douglass School Senior Apartments will expand affordable housing options for seniors in Thomasville. It is expected to provide quality housing and strengthen the community.
