IKEA is closing its Plan & Order Point with Pick-up stores in two locations. This is part of the company’s broader U.S. retail strategy. IKEA is also opening several stores in different locations, expanding its presence in the market.

IKEA’s Upcoming Closures

IKEA has announced several U.S. store closures this year as it reshapes its retail footprint. The company will close two of its Plan & Order Point with Pick-up stores. The affected locations are in South Charlotte, North Carolina, and The Domain in Austin, Texas.

The smaller-format stores were designed to help customers plan home furnishing and renovation projects. They also served as pickup locations for online orders. Unlike IKEA’s traditional warehouses, the smaller-format stores focused on planning services and order pickup.

The South Charlotte Plan & Order Point with Pick-up store will close on August 30. The location serves as a small-format planning studio where customers can consult with IKEA specialists. Specialists assist customers with planning kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and other home spaces.

The Domain location in Austin will also close at the end of August. IKEA said customers can complete their planning projects before the store closes or continue them at another location.  This is another Plan & Order Point with Pick-up store that is closing as part of the company’s new strategy.

Despite the closures, IKEA continues to invest in additional small-format locations across the U.S. According to TheStreet, the company is operating about 32 Plan & Order Point locations. IKEA is also continuing to open new, smaller stores in other markets to make shopping more convenient.

Broader U.S. Expansion Plan

According to IKEA, the closures reflect its ongoing evaluation of its U.S. retail network. The decision was made after considering factors such as store performance, market share, and operating costs. It is also part of the company’s ongoing effort to evaluate customer needs and improve services.

Separately, IKEA also announced the closure of its Memphis store on May 3. The company filed a WARN notice for its only location in Tennessee, affecting 114 employees.

Despite the closure, IKEA is continuing its $2.2 billion investment plan in the U.S., focusing on expanding its presence. IKEA recently opened a new 93,000-square-foot store in the Houston area.

IKEA also announced its plans to open four new U.S. stores in 2026. The new stores will open in Chicago, Tulsa, Fort Collins, and Los Angeles. These stores, along with the previously announced six other locations, will bring a total of 10 new IKEA stores nationwide in 2026.

IKEA is investing heavily in the U.S. to make shopping more convenient. It is opening a mix of traditional stores and smaller-format stores. It is also improving delivery, pickup, and online shopping services for a smoother customer experience.

While IKEA is closing its Plan & Order Point with Pick-up stores in South Charlotte and Austin, the company continues to add new locations across the U.S.
