Sunset Travel Center, a 24-hour fuel, food, and convenience stop, is proposed for the southwest corner of West Sunset Boulevard and South Loop Road in unincorporated south Placer County, about 2 miles south of Thunder Valley Casino Resort. Developer Andy Takhar confirmed to What Now Sacramento that the project remains in its early stages, with construction targeted for late 2027 or early 2028, though a firm timeline isn’t locked in yet.
The 4.25-acre site would include an ARCO AM/PM gas station with eight pumps and a 4,047-square-foot convenience store, a 1,580-square-foot retail suite, a 2,400-square-foot car wash, and a separate fueling island with five diesel dispensers built for semi-trucks. Two additional pads on the site are set aside for fast food or retail tenants, though nothing has been signed yet. EV charging stations and 81 parking stalls, including bike parking, round out the plan.
According to the Sacramento Business Journal, Takhar described the project as a convenient one-stop shop meant to fulfill strong demand for services supporting the surrounding industrial area, the local workforce and daily traffic along Highway 65. He told What Now Sacramento that the project is very much a family effort, developed alongside his brother, Robert Takhar, with the two bringing more than 25 years of combined experience operating gas stations and developing similar travel centers.
Property records show the site has been assembled by the John L. Sullivan Family LP through separate purchases in 2005 and 2010, with the smaller 2010 parcel selling for about $130,000. Site access would come from either South Loop Road or Placer Boulevard once construction begins.
“We’re super excited about the project and happy to be part of the community,” Takhar said, “and provide a great service to the area.”
