PepsiCo is laying off over 100 employees at its bottling facility in Cheverly, Maryland. The move is said to be part of the company’s recently announced initiative to shut down manufacturing and operations at the warehouse site.
PepsiCo Cuts 143 Jobs at Maryland Bottling Facility
PepsiCo Beverages laid off 143 employees at its 2611 Pepsi Pl, Hyattsville, Maryland bottling facility as the company ended manufacturing and warehouse operations at the location.
The soda company said the workforce reduction would not impact sales or delivery operations, according to a WARN letter dated Sept. 14.
PepsiCo Offers Support to Affected Workers
The layoffs directly impacted employees who worked as fleet, transport, production and other salaried individuals – of which 98 are said to be part of Teamsters Local 639 union members.
Employees that are affected will continue to collect pay and health care through November 13. The company also plans on assisting anyone with re-employment resources as well as financial aid if needed.
PepsiCo Cites Changing Consumer Demand
A company spokesperson said PepsiCo is modernizing its network in response to changing consumer demand and technology, according to Fox5.
Earlier this year, PepsiCo shut down a Frito-Lay facility in California, where about 250 employees were laid off, according to Food Dive. That closure was said to also be due to modernization efforts of the soda giant’s supply chain.
In fact, since late 2024 the company has closed or announced other facility closures at multiple facilities including Florida, New York, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In all, the job losses in the last two years have totaled close to 1,600 positions.
Cheverly town administration reportedly were notified of the closure the same day the action took effect and are said to immediately be reaching out to assist those affected.
“Our first concern is for the employees and families whose livelihoods are being affected by this decision. These workers are part of our community, and we recognize the uncertainty and hardship that a workforce reduction can create. We are committed to doing what we can to connect affected workers with available resources”, said Town Administrator Dylan Galloway.
