An upscale Houston-inspired restaurant, Barbacana, has shuttered permanently. After only two years of service, the restaurant served its final meal last weekend. The restaurant team shared the closure news on social media with a farewell message.
Downtown Houston’s Barbacana Shuts Down
Chef-owner Christian Hernandez led Barbacana casual fine-dining restaurant at 907 Franklin St. in Downtown Houston. The restaurant opened its doors in 2024.
Hernandez previously worked in Michelin-recognized kitchens in New York City and Mexico City. The menu of Barbacana was inspired by Houston’s diverse food culture and focused on a multicultural dining approach.
In a social media post, the restaurant owner shared, “After two years of big smiles, a few tears, and a lot of great memories, we’re calling it quits at Barbacana.”
Barbacana served its final guests on October 24. With an optimistic tone, Chef Hernandez noted that many would have blamed the economy and industry politics as the reason for closure, but not him. He explained that for Barbacana, it was a worthwhile experience.
Reflecting on the journey of the restaurant, he said, “Two years encompassing some of the highest and lowest points of my life, all revolving around this deeply personal undertaking.”
