For Jeff and Tinker Pope, opening an automotive repair shop was a dream years in the making. After spending countless hours working on vehicles in their home garage, repairing their own cars and helping friends and family, the couple finally decided to turn their shared passion into a business of their own.

That opportunity came to a culmination earlier this year, when Tinkerz Automotive officially opened its doors in Denton. The family-owned shop, located at 505 N Elm St., is built around the couple’s combined experience in the automotive industry. Their focus is to provide customers with honest recommendations, quality workmanship, and a more personal approach to vehicle repairs.

“We don’t just want to fix your vehicle. We want to earn your trust and become the shop you feel comfortable recommending to your friends and family,” the Popes told What Now in an exclusive interview. “We aren’t just here to repair cars. We’re here to build relationships, earn your trust, and become part of the community we love.”

Jeff, an Army veteran, has more than 30 years of management experience in the manufacturing industry, including 15 years as a plant manager. A lifelong automotive enthusiast, he has always had a particular interest in racing, hot rods, and anything with an engine. Tinker brings more than 20 years of experience in the automotive parts and repair industry, along with over a decade managing a family-owned towing and recovery business.

The idea for Tinkerz Automotive had been in the works for years, but the couple wanted to make sure the timing was right before taking the leap into business ownership. When the opportunity finally presented itself in 2025, they decided it was time to make their long-held goal a reality.

Denton was a natural choice. Jeff and Tinker were drawn to the city’s personality, its residents, and its sense of community.

With an approximately 15,100-square-foot facility, Tinkerz Automotive has the capacity to accommodate up to 16 vehicles at a time. The shop currently employs a team of six and provides a range of automotive and light diesel repair services — everything from routine maintenance, oil changes, belts and hoses to advanced diagnostics, major mechanical repairs, and complete engine replacements.

A major part of their business approach is transparency. The owners believe customers should understand what is happening with their vehicles, why certain repairs may be necessary, and what options are available before making a decision.

That emphasis on customer relationships also influenced how the couple has approached the shop’s first year in business. It isn’t simply about numbers to the Popes.

“Our primary goal during the first year is not simply to increase sales or the number of vehicles coming through the doors; it’s to build lasting relationships,” they explained. “Treat people the way you would want your own family to be treated.”

Since opening, the garage has received positive feedback from customers, including five-star Google reviews highlighting the team’s professionalism, friendliness, and customer service. They have also worked to become more involved in the community, joining the local Chamber of Commerce and supporting youth sports teams in the area.

Over the next few years, they hope to expand the team and increase the range of services available, eventually introducing classic vehicle restoration and maintenance. The immediate focus remains on growing Tinkerz Automotive’s customer base and expanding its reputation.

“Our goal is simple: We want to be your go-to automotive repair shop in Denton and the surrounding communities,” they shared.
