Patchwork Craft Lounge, a new arts and crafts lounge, is preparing to open at 4120 NE Fremont St. in Northeast Portland. Owner Betsy Lopez-Riley confirmed to What Now Portland that the space is in its build-out phase and that she hopes to open in early December, possibly during the first week of the month.

The idea is to offer a more polished take on the typical art studio. Guests will reserve a time slot, pick a pre-stenciled 20-by-16-inch canvas and choose from a materials bar to glue onto it, leaving with a finished mixed-media art piece. Snacks and drinks will be available throughout the visit.

“My goal is to open up a more elevated, high-end lounge for when you come and do arts and crafts,” Lopez-Riley told What Now Portland. “I want it to be different than what is normally out there. Feel less like an art studio and more like a boutique lounge where you can come and hang out.”

At first, Patchwork will operate by reservation only. Each booking lasts one hour and 45 minutes, during which guests choose their art piece, select their materials and glue them onto the canvas outline. Anyone who doesn’t finish can take supplies home, or leave a wet piece at the lounge and pick it up later. Lopez-Riley said she wants every visit to be “a well curated hosted experience” while she gets her bearings, and plans to expand the programming as she learns what people want and gets to know the neighborhood.

The lounge’s planned hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., a schedule that fits date nights, girls’ nights and after-work get-togethers. The space is also applying for a limited on-premises liquor license for drinks served during sessions.

For Lopez-Riley, the setting matters as much as the art. “The goal is for this to be a thoughtfully curated boutique-like atmosphere that is just as much a part of the experience as the art itself. So it’s not just about the art. It’s also about the vibe,” she told What Now Portland. “The goal for Patchwork is to bring together creativity, connection, and hospitality. I want to be a good host in a setting that’s designed to make the entire visit feel special.”
