Knoxville-based fashion retailer Altar’d State is preparing to open a new store at 419 S. Gay St. in downtown Knoxville, taking over space in the historic Kress Building. The upcoming addition was highlighted in an Instagram post by The Daily Beacon, which noted the excitement among students about having another accessible clothing retailer close to campus.
The new location will bring the retailer’s fashion-focused shopping experience closer to the University of Tennessee community. Students interviewed by The Daily Beacon expressed interest in having more clothing stores within walking distance, particularly those offering everyday apparel rather than merchandise primarily aimed at visitors and Tennessee fans.
According to Altar’d State’s official website, the company was established in 2009 with a vision of creating a different kind of retail experience, combining fashion with a commitment to charitable giving. Its collections include women’s dresses, tops, skirts, denim, outerwear, matching sets and accessories. The retailer also features footwear, jewelry, handbags and seasonal collections, giving shoppers options for both everyday wardrobes and special occasions.
The company describes its shopping environment as welcoming, with curated merchandise and an emphasis on personal style. Its community-focused approach also includes Mission Monday, a program through which participating stores donate 10% of their net proceeds on Mondays to nonprofit organizations supporting local needs.
The Kress Building provides a prominent address along South Gay Street, placing the upcoming retailer within downtown Knoxville’s established shopping district. The historic property previously housed Nashville-based café Frothy Monkey, which closed its location in 2025.
While an official opening date and further details about the new store have not yet been announced, the addition represents another opportunity for Altar’d State to establish a presence in its home city’s downtown retail scene. The development is also expected to broaden shopping options for students, residents and visitors exploring Gay Street.
