Cinnapop Cafe is preparing to open at 611 16th St. in Midtown Sacramento, with a soft opening planned for November. The cafe is owned by husband-and-wife team Tola Vong and Chhayleang Tang, who began selling their baked treats from a pop-up tent at Sacramento farmers markets earlier this summer. The cafe is small, at about 500 square feet, so the couple is focused on making it feel warm and homey, like a place where customers can walk in and feel at home. Their goal is for the cinnamon rolls to taste homemade.
The shop will sell cinnamon rolls made from scratch, matcha and coffee drinks and soft-serve ice cream. It will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Cinnapop came out of the couple’s own kitchen skills. Vong has worked as a baker for about 15 years, while Tang studied culinary school for two years and enjoyed making dough and baking. She said her love of cinnamon rolls began the first time she tried one, which led her to start making them and then to sell them. Their rolls come in classic and creative flavors, including blueberry, apple cinnamon, mango, ube, matcha, tiramisu and Oreo, with frosting that changes by season. The business is based in North Highlands.
The Midtown space has had a few cafe tenants. It was previously home to Flow State Coffee, and most recently to Sun House Cafe, whose owners, Lalo Mata and Leandra Coronado, closed there in August and moved the cafe to a larger space at 1805 Capitol Ave., next to Zócalo and Fieldwork Brewing Co. The new Sun House space is about 1,400 square feet.
Tang said the couple is thankful to the customers who found them at farmers markets. Over time, they want to grow Cinnapop into a recognizable brand and become part of the local community.
The Cinnapop Cafe plans were reported by the Sacramento Business Journal.
