Permit applications have been filed this week for the construction of Savannah College of Art and Design‘s 1,000-bed student housing mixed-use project in Midtown.
Submitted Wednesday for 1470 Spring St. NW, the series of filings is for the construction of several of the project components, including a new 11-story residence hall, with a cost of construction listed as $36.2 million, and a new 14-story mixed-use building including a 700-seat theater, with a total construction cost of just over $55 million.
The filings reflect revised plans for the project, which SCAD originally announced would be a 20-story student housing building with about 1,000 beds. Now, as Urbanize reported last month, plans call for an 11-story initial building with 581 beds that is expected to deliver in August of next year, followed by the project’s remaining beds in a slightly taller building.
According to this week’s filings, the initial building will include on its ground floor a campus store, dining hall, and resident director offices, with floors two through 11 containing student residences.
The second-phase, south residence hall building will feature “storage and business” occupancy along with the theater (on floors one and two) and residences (on floors eight through 14), according to filings, which also show plans for a fitness area and pool deck.
Also filed on Wednesday was a permit application for the construction of four levels of parking within the second-phase building, with a cost of construction for that specified as about $10.5 million.
SCAD’s progress this week at 1470 Spring is part of a large expansion of its Atlanta campus. In 2019, it opened Forty, a 14-story residence hall just left of where its project now under development is set to rise.
