A new bakery is in the works in North Charleston.

America “Mery” Martinez is renovating a 1,200 square-foot former Army Navy Surplus retail space at 5131 Dorchester Road for her Sweet Moon Bakery. The sweet shop will join the 787 Bar & Grill, Tienda Juanita, Freeway Insurance, Xclusive Beauty Salon and several other businesses in the Dorchester Road strip.

Martinez, who has previously created custom cakes as a home baker, studied at the culinary school locally at Trident Technical College. She shared with What Now Charleston that her bakery will mainly focus on specialty cakes and soft ice cream, but also plans to offer traditional Mexican breads and pastries.

Though an official opening date has not yet been set, Martinez tells What Now Charleston they hope to open their doors before Christmas in time to serve sweets for the holidays.
