This week, local ice cream company Johnson’s Real Ice Cream announced in a press release its plans to open its ninth location at 50 S Liberty St, in Powell. The store is currently slated to open in April and it will be the company’s second Powell shop, with its first Powell location at 4290 Home Road, expected to open in March.
A local, family-owned company, Johnson’s is celebrating its 75th year in business this year by launching three new stores. In addition to its two Powell locations, the company is also expected to open a Pickerington store in May.
In a phone interview with What Now Columbus, Matt Wilcoxon, the company’s fourth-generation owner, shared that Johnson’s is excited for what 2025 holds and for the business’s second Powell storefront.
Earlier this month, wood-fired eatery Elliot’s Wood Fired Kitchen & Tap announced it would also move into a vacant space at 50 S Liberty, and that restaurant will fill the The Liberty Tavern’s former home. The area is in the midst of a revitalization and Wilcoxon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join the neighborhood.
“The city is on board to help revitalize the area and we’re grateful that we’re a part of it,” Wilcoxon said.
The Liberty Street store will be 1,300-square-feet, which Wilcoxon shared is typical of the other existing stores’ footprints. The Powell menu will feature all the ice cream treats guests of the brand’s other locations are familiar with, including sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, shakes, cakes and pies.
