Who knew eating a burger could be healthy?
Atlanta-based plant burger spot Slutty Vegan is now stepping into the Detroit area for the first time. This new brick-and-mortar location is on the way to 1441 W Elizabeth Street in Corktown. Franchisee Obinani Iwuoha who owns Nigerian Streetz Cuisine is bringing the chain to the neighborhood. Iwuoha told What Now Detroit he is aiming to open the space around September.
Slutty Vegan has grown to five brick-and-mortar locations in Edgewood and Jonesboro, both in Georgia, Birmingham, Alabama, Brooklyn, New York and Baltimore. It was started by Pinky Cole Hayes in 2018 in Atlanta’s West End. She first started selling her burgers on Instagram, then was able to secure a location in the area and opened it by October.
Franchisee Iwuoha has years of hospitality experience, and his food truck for Nigerian cuisine operates around Southeast Michigan. He has been working with the Slutty Vegan team for a few months to get the new spot open, and he plans on debuting new locations around Michigan as he has the rights to the franchise. He has not announced additional locations as of yet.
The plant-based burgers are stacked with flavor, like their “one night stand” burger featuring vegan bacon, vegan cheese, onions and their “slut sauce” on a Hawaiian bun. Those not in the book for a burger can try their “big meat” brisket sandwich with vegan pulled brisket. Their slutty fries are available on the side, with lemonade, slushies and desserts like banana pudding and churros.
Iwuoha’s new spot is opening behind McShane’s Irish Pub & Whiskey Bar, across from The Corner Ballpark. This is also near the intersection of Michigan Avenue, on the north end of Corktown. While the new location is not yet listed online, he will release more information as it gets closer to the opening.
