GEN Korean BBQ will be renovating the building at 212 21st Ave S, according to recently filed permits. The spot is near the Vanderbilt University campus.

The space will undergo interior renovations, according to the permit.

Jae Chang opened the first GEN in Tustin, Calif. in September 2011. David Kim joined GEN shortly after, and the two have been co-CEOs since 2021. Both Chang and Kim had past experience in managing restaurant concepts.

The California-based chain currently has locations in eight states, with its strongest presence in California. This will be the Korean BBQ spot’s first location in Tennessee.

GEN Korean BBQ is known for its all-you-can-eat menu, with wide selections of beef, pork, chicken and seafood, as well as veggies, sauces and appetizers.

The building has been vacant since 2018, when pizzeria Mellow Mushroom moved to another location.
