Beloved New Orleans diner Leni’s Cafe will close permanently this month. The owners announced the closure on social media, citing retirement after decades of serving generations of local customers.
Leni’s Cafe to Close This Month
On May 4, Leni’s Cafe took to its Facebook page, sharing the closure news with its customers. After nearly 50 years at 741 Baronne St., the restaurant will close on May 29, 2026.
Leni’s is a family-style restaurant in New Orleans’ City Business District that serves breakfast and lunch from 6 am to 2:30 pm. The menu includes breakfast staples like pancakes, along with fried chicken and hamburgers.
Hamburger Steak, Cheeseburger, Oyster Po’ Boys, and Fried Shrimp are some of the popular dishes at Leni’s recommended by diners.
The closure of Leni’s follows the owners’ decision to retire. The post stated, “Mr. Pete and Mrs. Debbie have made the decision to retire.” In the post, Mr. Pete shared that the concept has been more than just a restaurant.
Community Reacts to the Cafe’s Upcoming Closure
Following the announcement, customers shared memories and expressed gratitude on social media. Many customers said Leni’s Cafe as part of their daily routine for breakfasts, lunches, and friendly interaction with the staff.
Regular patrons commented that the diner is a remnant of old downtown New Orleans, especially for those who visit frequently before the area was remodeled. Others appreciated the restaurant’s consistency, affordable menu, and welcoming atmosphere.
The restaurant also expressed gratitude for community support and loyalty. The restaurant invited diners to visit in the final days and cherish the long, memorable journey. The post ended with, “We hope to see you before we close our doors.”
