The Abbey Group LLC Seeks Chapter 11 Protection

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based company submitted its petition on May 22, 2026. Case filings state that it is currently doing business as The Abbey on Butler Street.

While PACER filings do not explicitly state the reason, the move appears intended as a financial reorganization following multiple unsecured creditor claims.

The debtor has not yet made any official announcement citing the bankruptcy. Regular operations at the establishment are expected to continue as normal.

The bankruptcy filing comes just over a month after the company marked its 10-year anniversary. On April 1, 2026, The Abbey on Butler Street thanked diners through a Facebook post for stopping by through the decade.

Petition Shows Financial Distress

Case filings show that the debtor submitted a list of creditors who have made the 20 largest unsecured claims and are not insiders. Ranging from tax loans to government claims and vendor debt to operating expenses, the nature of these claims are diverse. In addition, it hints at both internal and external financial pressures troubling The Abbey Group LLC.

Court filings even indicate that after administrative expenses are paid, no funds will be available for distribution to the unsecured creditors.

Out of all the 20 unsecured creditors, Christopher McAlee holds the largest claim of more than $757,000. Other creditors with the largest unsecured claims, as given in the petition, include CESC-Covid EIDL Service Center, Internal Revenue Service, PA Department of Revenue, SBA 504 Loan, and WebBank.

Case filings state that attorney David Z. Valencik is offering legal representation to the debtor. In addition, Eric W. Kukura is the authorized representative who signed the petition prior to filing.

Case records show that the debtor submitted a corporate ownership statement as well.

About the Company

The venue operates as a multi-format hospitality space featuring a coffeehouse, two bars, and a dining area. Through its all-day service model, The Abbey Group LLC presents café-style service during daytime hours. Dining and cocktail service are offered in the evening.

The establishment is based in a restored historic building that has been redeveloped into the current property, its website states.

The filing is aimed at restructuring rather than an immediate shutdown for the Pittsburgh-based establishment. This is expected to allow the business to continue operating under court supervision while reorganizing its financial obligations and addressing unsecured creditor claims.
