Originating in Pennsylvania, Wawa convenience stores can now be found at numerous locations across the country. Two Wawa stores in Philadelphia are scheduled to close in April 2025 due to operational challenges and the absence of gas pumps, which impacted their revenue.
Highlights
- Wawa is an all-rounder convenience store chain to grab quick foods, with associated gas stations.
- Currently, Wawa operates over 1,100 stores across 10 states and Washington, D.C.
- This April, some of the stores will be closed due to financial and other challenges.
Popular Convenience Store Will Close in April 2025

Wawa stores are a one-stop solution for people running errands or wanting to have a quick bite. However, the brand has announced the closure of some convenience stores in Northeast Pennsylvania.
As per the WARN notice released by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the following stores will be closed in Philadelphia:
- 6506 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19149 – April 22, 2025
- 6919 Castor Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19149 – April 24, 2025
As of now, there is no information on whether staff layoffs will take place or how they will be compensated. These two store locations did not have gas pumps like other Wawa stores. This made a huge difference in revenue.
Further, when the evaluations regarding performance and operational challenges were made, these locations failed to meet the set requirements. From the company’s point of view, they have to do such analysis from time to time and have to take a tough call of closure whenever necessary.
Wawa: One of the Largest Store and Gas Station Chains
Today, Wawa is a popular convenience store and gas station chain, which once started as a dairy business in 1920 in Pennsylvania. Sandwiches, beverages, and other quick bites have hooked the customers and made Wawa their preferred choice.
As per recent data, 10 states and territories of the USA have Wawa stores across a total of 1,113 locations. The maximum number of these stores are located in Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, comprising 77% of the total stores.
Philadelphia had a total of 34 locations where Wawa stores were present. 11 of them closed since 2020 due to the financial crisis triggered by the pandemic. One store closed last year at 3230 Richmond Street in Philadelphia because of similar reasons as the ones announced for closure this April.
