An authentic Colombian cafe brews up plans to caffeinate South Philadelphia.
Mornings in Medellin Cafe, owned by husband-and-wife duo Francisco and Michelle Velasquez, will open at 1229 S. 6th St. in South Philadelphia.
“My wife and her whole family are from Medellin [a city in Colombia]. We said for years that it would be great to have the culinary culture of Colombia here in South Philly,” Francisco told Whatnow Philadelphia.
The cafe will reflect Colombia’s vibrant culture with red, yellow and blue hues throughout the space.
The menu will feature drip coffee and espresso drinks made with beans sourced from Colombia. Coffee enthusiasts can join the Morning Club, a two-tiered subscription program. The “Brew” tier offers unlimited drip coffee, while “All In” includes unlimited drip coffee and espresso drinks.
The club currently has an active waitlist.
“If you’re a local neighbor or if you’ll come here every day, it’s basically less than a dollar for coffee,” he said.
To complement its coffee offerings, the cafe will serve Colombian baked goods, empanadas and pandebono, a traditional Colombian cheese bread.
The duo hopes to share a piece of home with the community.
“I’m excited about integrating into the community, welcoming everyone and meeting the people that we’ll serve. You don’t need to be Colombian or Hispanic to walk in. You can just be a Philadelphian, walk in and enjoy the culture,” Francisco said.
Mornings in Medellin Cafe plans to open in January 2027. Visit the website and follow along on Instagram for the latest updates.
