King Coffee plans to relocate from 1020 S. Mill Ave. in Tempe to 1620 W. University Drive, Suite 3, in Mesa, owner Sallie Figueroa told What Now Phoenix.
The family-owned coffee shop hopes to complete the move by the end of 2026. King Coffee will continue operating in Tempe while work continues at the former Zio’s Pizza and Wings space.
King Coffee opened in Tempe nearly 12 years ago. Figueroa said the team had intended to remain at its current location, but the property owner plans to construct a new building there.
The new cafe is about 10 minutes from the Tempe shop and approximately one mile from Mesa Riverview and Sloan Park. Figueroa said the area has few local, independent coffee shops.
The move also has a family connection. Figueroa’s son, Josh, lives near the Mesa property with his family. He started the original King Coffee, remains involved in its daily operations, and serves as the company’s master roaster.
The approximately 2,000-square-foot Mesa cafe will have twice as much seating as the Tempe location, along with a full kitchen and additional parking. The larger space will allow King Coffee to host community events, live music, and DJ nights.
“We will definitely serve our most beloved items, but we are also very excited to build on our menu with the addition of a full kitchen in the new space,” Figueroa said.
Plans include pastries and breads baked in-house, nitro cold brew, a larger breakfast and lunch selection, and weekend brunch. Figueroa said the team also wants the new menu to reflect her family’s Filipino-American background and the Mexican heritage of Josh’s wife.
“We are looking forward to this new chapter of King Coffee, and want to share it with our loyal and future customers,” Figueroa said.
