Matcha House is preparing to open near downtown Phoenix in late August or early September, owner Rocio Sheyko told What Now Phoenix. The Latina-owned cafe was recently announced on social media.
The opening marks Sheyko’s return to the local cafe scene after operating Matcha Grove in Gilbert from 2021 to 2023. The previous cafe specialized in ceremonial-grade matcha alongside a fully gluten-free menu before closing.
“I’ve been wanting to pursue it again since closing in 2023. We were given an opportunity to do that, and I’ve just taken it and am moving forward,” Sheyko said.
The owner said downtown Phoenix felt like the right place for the new concept because of its culture, walkability, and central location. The cafe will be located near the Phoenix Art Museum beneath a residential apartment complex.
Guests can expect ceremonial-grade matcha prepared using traditional whisking methods, along with coffee drinks, avocado toast, gluten-free waffles, and a selection of grab-and-go items.
“I think the biggest thing is bringing back what matcha is in its true form. We don’t pre-batch it. We use ceremonial-grade matcha and prepare it the way it’s meant to be,” Sheyko added.
Beyond the beverages, Sheyko hopes Matcha House becomes a place where people can gather and connect with friends.
The team plans to hold a soft opening before a grand opening celebration, with dates to be announced on Matcha House’s Instagram page.
