Located at 6506 SE Foster Road in Portland, Da’Hui Hawaiian Bar and Grill has been offering food and tiki drinks until late for almost two decades. Owner Mike Collman has been heading the bar up for 18 years.

“It’s a tiki bar, a Hawaiian bar and grill, and we seeve a full menu until 1:30 am. I don’t know many other places that stay open past 10 anymore,” Collman told What Now on Friday.

Closing the kitchen earlier isn’t the only thing that’s changed in recent years, Collman says. There’s another noticeable difference: people drink a lot less than they used to.

“It’s been a big question, since alcohol sales were really what carried everybody.”

But a challenge is also an opportunity: Da’Hui Bar & Grill is currently at work on a creative new non-alcoholic drinks menu that features cocktails made with kava and other elixirs. It promises something more than “mocktails”: a mood-enhancing non-alcoholic cocktail.

Meanwhile, Collman has another project in the works. This week, What Now came across liquor licensing paperwork submitted for the Tonga Room, a new venue that would open at 8000 SE Foster Road. The license runs the gamut entertainment-wise, with everything from Video Lottery Machines to live music to dancing.

Collman says it’s still too early to share much about the Tonga Room, but keep your eyes peeled for more info coming soon.
