Sports Basement is making its move. The San Francisco outdoor and sporting goods retailer is set to open its first Sacramento-area location at 6681 Stanford Ranch Road in Rocklin this early fall, taking over the former Floor & Decor space in a 67,000-square-foot store that will be one of the largest sporting goods destinations in Placer County.
“Rocklin is exactly our kind of community,” said David Rumberg, Partner and Head of Real Estate at Sports Basement, who confirmed the details to What Now Sacramento. “Active, family-oriented, and full of people who love being outdoors.”
The store will carry the brand’s signature mix of top-tier outdoor brands at discounted prices, with names like Patagonia, Hoka, Vuori, The North Face, Burton, Garmin, On, and Yeti on the shelves. But what sets Sports Basement apart from a standard sporting goods chain is the experience around the product. An extensive gear rental and demo program means customers can try before they buy, and free community event space will be available to local groups for group runs, rides, clinics, and youth programming.
“Our goal has never been to be just a store,” Rumberg said. “We’re in the business of getting people outside doing the things they love. Everything we do, from the gear we rent to the people we hire, is built around removing whatever gets in the way.”
Founded in 1998 and employee-owned through an ESOP structure, Sports Basement gives every team member a stake in the company’s success. The Rocklin store plans to hire 50 to 60 local full- and part-time employees, with hiring kicking off this summer. Applications are open now at their website.
The brand’s Basementeer membership program lets customers direct a share of their purchase profits to a local school or nonprofit of their choosing. Since 1998, Sports Basement has given back more than $11 million through the program. The Rocklin store will be Sports Basement’s 16th location, joining an existing footprint concentrated in the Bay Area.
