Normal Heights is getting a new cafe as MAKE Café moves forward with plans for a restaurant on Felton Street in San Diego, according to a recent liquor license application.
Construction has begun and will include a 900-square-foot commercial kitchen, a 48-seat dining room, an outdoor bar, a large garden patio, and a culinary garden. The new location sits at 4712 Felton Street and was previously the Jackson Electric Company.
MAKE Projects is a hyperlocal farm, cafe, and social enterprise that empowers refugee and immigrant women through food, agriculture, and community. They provide a paid work experience and one-on-one coaching for low-income refugee and immigrant women with employment barriers. The aim is to provide participants with job readiness skills.
According to MAKE Projects executive director Anchi Mei, commenting on the project on the organization’s blog last year, she said the property is a double lot.
“We are blessed with this incredible outdoor yard that will have an outdoor bar and culinary garden. For those of you who remember our first MAKE Cafe and Garden home on 30th Street, this new home will basically replicate that in permanent brick-and-mortar form. No more lugging tables, chairs, and a coffee cart back and forth twice a day,” she said in one of her posts.
There is no exact opening date yet; Mei was unable to comment to WhatNow Media at the time of publication.
