Square Pizza Co., a local slice shop serving Detroit, Sicilian, and Boston Beach-style pizza by the square, is preparing to open a new location in San Diego at 699 Park Boulevard.

The company’s second location is set to move into the former home of Make Pizza & Salads in East Village. Co-owner Fred Santos tells What Now San Diego that this location is expected to open in September 2025. Santos and his business partner Bruno Lippi launched Square Pizza Company in the Historical Dunaway Building in the heart of Pacific Beach at 4508 Cass Street. This is a massive accomplishment for the ownership team, which opened the concept in late 2016.

Square Pizza Co. serves three styles of Sicilian-inspired pizza: thin-crust Boston Beach Pizza, Upside-down Sicilian, and Detroit Style. Their thin-crust pizza is a take on the North Shore of Boston’s “Beach Pizza,” known for its crispy crust, sweet sauce, and a slice of provolone on top. The Upside-down Sicilian has cheese under the sauce for a different texture, while the Detroit Style has a thick, crispy-edged crust. The company focuses on quality by using locally sourced produce, American-made ingredients, and a slow fermentation process for better flavor.

Santos and Lippi, both from Boston’s North Shore, started Square Pizza Co. to bring a taste of home to San Diego. They grew up on Beach Pizza and worked at the well-known Tripoli Bakery, which inspired them to open their own shop. Their goal is simple—make great pizza, build a solid team, and create a welcoming spot for the community. They also focus on sustainability by using eco-friendly packaging and responsible ingredient sourcing.
