Sunmerry Bakery has been busy expanding in California for some time. The bakery, founded in 1986 in Taiwan, is family-owned and specializes in pastries that use Japanese baking techniques fused with Taiwan flavors. The bakery recently celebrated the soft-opening of it’s 9th California location in L.A.’s Sawtelle. Sunmerry Bakery has two additional shops in New Jersey, one in New York, oh and 30 or so in Taipei.
San Diego’s first Sunmerry Bakery is headed to 8110 Mira Mesa Blvd. Owner Peter Kao, who oversees the US bakeries, shares Sunmerry Mira Mesa should open by the end of the first quarter of 2022. Sunmerry Bakery is setting up shop in the Village at Mira Mesa shopping center, which is anchored by national retailers like Marshalls, Petco, and Sprouts Farmers Market
Kao tells What Now San Diego Sunmerry Bakery’s pastries tend to be traditional, and you can find both sweet and savory bites on the menu. “We have taro, we have black sesame, we have green tea matcha, as well as some of the items you see at your dim sum houses,” says Kao. The Taro Milk Cake is a very popular menu item, as is the BBQ Pork Chashu Bolo, which is made in-house. In addition to the over 80 varieties of breads and cakes, Sunmerry Bakery has a drink line. Currently, the bakery carries Happy Lemon boba tea, which is already a San Diego-fav.
Once Sunmerry has officially set up shop in SD, you should be able to order the treats right to your door with apps like GrubHub and Doordash. Although if you’re like me, and you like to plan for seconds, best to go in person. In the meantime, check out Sunmerry Bakery on the gram.
