Wolf in the Woods, a project that has been in the works since around 2017, is almost ready to open its doors in Mission Hills. Located in a historic building in the Fort Stockton area, the restaurant will serve wine and tapas with a Mexican flair.

What Now San Diego caught up on the project with Co-Owner Johnny Rivera. “It’s been quite a project, I’d say five years in the making that was put on hold due to COVID.” The gourmet tapas restaurant will take inspiration from Europe and Mexico, with interior design reminiscent of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rivera describes it as, “The sort of place you might find while walking down a little alley in Madrid.”

The project began as a larger vision but after receiving substantial pushback due to city zoning, ownership chose to retool the idea as a smaller project. Although the historic building had long been occupied since the 1930s as a retail space, over time it was somehow rezoned as residential.

After a long process to update zoning with the city Planner, the restaurant was moving along with food and alcohol permits. Then COVID hit and the project was once again stalled. Now, Wolf in the Woods is readying the space and placing staff in order to open their doors in November. The restaurant doesn’t have an online presence just yet but stay tuned for updates on Instagram in the future.
