Speculation that Regal had permanently shuttered The Tara Theatre, at 2345 Cheshire Bridge Rd NE, gained traction swiftly on social media Monday. Jim Rhinehardt shared a photo to the Buckhead Natives Facebook group of the cinema’s marquee, which states “we are closed,” alongside patently false information. The post went viral without haste.
“Lowes Tara is now closed for good and the [Varsity Junior] is a storage building…what’s gonna happen next?,” Rhinehardt wrote. “Wait…don’t answer that!”
The social media post was shared 90 times as of this publication and What Now Atlanta (WNA) in turn received an influx of inquiries from Atlantans seeking to verify the rumor. Regal quickly dispelled the falsehood.
“Regal is proud to operate the Tara theatre,” a spokesperson for the company Monday told WNA in a prepared statement. “As with all Regal locations, we had to temporarily close the theatre due to the current circumstances; however, this is not a permanent closure.”
The Tara Theatre first opened in June 1968 under parent company Loew’s Theatres. United Artists Theaters later bought the theatre before merging with Edwards Theatres which, together in 2002 became Regal Entertainment Group.
Don’t forget this was part of the LeFont chain for sometime!! It was not always a “corporate” Ovid theater!! And it had one big screen!
