Acclaimed chef Ken Vedrinski has announced plans to open a new restaurant in downtown Charleston, near the Medical University of South Carolina.

According to The Post and Courier, Volpe’s is named after Vedrinski’s beloved grandmother, paying homage to the deep-rooted Italian culinary traditions he learned in her kitchen.

Vedrinski is a celebrated figure in Charleston’s dining world, known for his former restaurant, Trattoria Lucca, as well as his Italian seafood restaurant, Coda del Pesce, which offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Both establishments have been named among Charleston’s Best Restaurants by Zagat, cementing Vedrinski’s reputation for delivering exceptional fare and memorable dining experiences.

Despite his successful career, Vedrinski told The Post and Courier that he wasn’t planning to open another restaurant in downtown Charleston. However, after walking into the 161 Rutledge Ave space—formerly home to Spanish and Portuguese eatery Laurel—he was smitten.

Impressed by the pristine condition of the redesigned space and the practical amenities, including a nearby garage, he saw potential in the location that he just couldn’t resist.

Volpe’s will focus on American Italian shareable plates. The menu will center around a four-course, family-style meal priced at roughly $60, providing a more casual and affordable alternative to the high-end Italian options in the area.

“It’s going to be rustic and fun,” Vedrinski told The Post and Courier. “We’re going to just do really, really great American Italian.”

Anticipated to open in late September of 2024, Volpe’s is set to bring a new wave of Italian charm to downtown Charleston, inviting diners to enjoy a taste of Chef Vedrinski’s heritage in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
