An exciting new restaurant concept is currently being developed for the East Village.
The Sefton is well known as a popular Irish pub based out of the Upper East Side. The restaurant was named after an Irish Draught horse who came to prominence after being injured in the Hyde Park and Regent’s Park bombings. After recovering from his injuries and returning to service in the British Army, Sefton was awarded with the title of “Horse of the Year” and became one of the first horses to be placed in the British Horse Society’s equestrian Hall of Fame. It was with that same spirit of loyalty and service that owner Patrick Cremin launched The Sefton in 2019, located at 1373 First Avenue, serving up Irish-inspired cocktails and dishes in an elevated pub atmosphere.
Now, Patrick and his team at The Sefton are currently gearing up to launch a brand new concept downtown. Their latest project, which has yet to be officially named, is currently slated to arrive at 99 Second Avenue, in the space where Calexico previously operated. Located between East Sixth and East Fifth Streets, Calexico began as a small Mexican food truck and soon expanded to become one of the city’s favorite new chain of Mexican restaurants. While location at 99 Second Avenue has closed down for good, Calexico thankfully operates multiple different locations across the city.
The new location is currently expected to seat about 38 guests inside, with enough room to seat an additional 15 guests along the ground floor bar. There are also plans in place to operate a small outdoor cafe that will seat an extra 16 guests and will close at 10:00 PM. The cellar meanwhile will be reserved for food prep and storage.
The cuisine at Cremin’s new restaurant is described as “American fusion”, and he has attached a sample menu to his liquor license application to indicate the kind of food he intends to serve. Examples from the menu include appetizers like spinach and artichoke dip, beef carpaccio, and rosemary focaccia as well as salads like the Little Gem Caesar and the roasted beet and goat cheese salad. For the entrees, samples include the house burger with Pat Lafrieda beef, steak frites, lemon charred chicken, and spinach and ricotta ravioli.
Of course, the new restaurant will also have an exciting array of beer and cocktails, but the team must first acquire the necessary liquor license to make that happen. The team is currently proposing operating hours of 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM every day, seven days a week. While the new concept is still early into development, you can follow along with the team at The Sefton’s Instagram page for regular updates on all their latest endeavors.
