The Theatre District’s favorite new diner is gearing up for a brand new expansion.
Carnegie Diner & Cafe is a popular diner concept from owner Stathis Antonakopoulos. Prior to opening up Carnegie, Stathis previously operated Stix Restaurant Group, a successful series of Mediterranean restaurants that operates five unique locations across Manhattan. Additionally, he also recently opened up Pizza & Shakes, a build-your-own pizza restaurant on the corner of 57th Street and Seventh Avenue, offering over 12 unique flavors of ice cream, shakes, and Gelato. In 2019, Stathis decided to venture into a brand new concept when he opened up Carnegie Diner & Cafe at 205 West 57th Street, opposite New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall Theatre.
Offering all-day breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and cocktail options, Carnegie Diner quickly established itself as one of the neighborhood’s premiere destinations for pre-theatre dining. The diner is especially well-known for their organic burgers, which are made fresh daily with their secret blend recipe, and was recently awarded “Diners Choice” from Open Table.
Now, after recently launching his first-ever expansion in Secaucus, Stathis is now getting ready to open up the diner’s second New York location. He has just secured a 20-year lease for a brand new expansion at 828 Eighth Avenue, replacing Thalia, a popular restaurant and cocktail bar that offered American cuisine with European accents before closing earlier in 2019. Featuring 5,500 square feet of space, the new Carnegie diner is expected to feature a 175–seat dining room area and central bar, as well a mural of Carnegie Hall and 26-seat sidewalk cafe.
Stathis recently said of the deal in a statement that they “are the new the kids on the block,” adding that they “are bringing the freshness of the brand with every day, all-day breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want to have an omelette for dinner, you are welcome to do so.”
At the moment, the new Carnegie Diner is expected to open up to the public April 2023, and will operate daily from 7:00 AM – 1:00 AM. For more information as Stathis continues to develop his new restaurant, you can follow Carnegie Diner on Instagram.
