The Grand Theater building at 1917 Del Paso Boulevard is a landmark in old North Sacramento — and one that has sat vacant for far too long. Now, there seem to be some new movements as the City of Sacramento recently received another application to modernize and repurpose the vacant building into a new event venue.
Property owner Kabul Singh submitted a similar project in 2020 to merge the three lots the theater sat on into one, along with various modernizations to give the theater a new life. Part of the application eventually expired before moving forward, whereas the merging plan is “under review” in the city’s database.
The new application proposes to obtain permits for the existing building to allow interior changes to existing wall openings, flooring, exterior openings, and upgrades to electrical and plumbing. Upgrades will also be done to the kitchen and bathroom to meet modern requirements. The project also indicates a new bar that will be added to the space.
Nasir Choudry of Elk Grove-based Infinity General Engineering Construction & Design submitted the new project. Choudry is also listed on the application as the representative of owner Singh. The proposed use of the 12,000-square-foot building is listed as a “banquet hall,” and a Business Journal article indicated that Choudry expects the construction only to take a few months.
Singh told What Now Sacramento that he would share more details once they’re through the permitting process, but he has high hopes for the project receiving city approval.
