Memphis entrepreneurs Ken and Mary Olds, founders of the successful Muggin Coffeehouse chain, are expanding their vision with another café at 1212 Vollintine Ave in North Memphis. This expansion follows the closure of their Whitehaven location, as announced in a heartfelt Instagram post thanking the community for their support over the past 4 years. Despite the setback, the husband-and-wife team remains determined to extend their coffee-centric community ethos to the vibrant up-and-coming neighborhood of North Memphis, building upon the success of their thriving Uptown location.

Reflecting on their journey, the Olds told Edible Memphis that their mission is to create spaces that nurture community and connection, particularly in underserved Black neighborhoods where such gathering spots are scarce. Their goal is to provide locals and visitors alike with a welcoming environment where they can enjoy a cup of coffee, socialize with friends, tackle work tasks, or simply unwind.

At Muggin Coffeehouse, patrons are greeted with vibrant colors and soulful music. The diverse menu offers a variety of coffee beverages, teas, smoothies, and locally sourced pastries. Partnering with Memphis roaster J. Brooks ensures quality coffee blends, complemented by vegan treats from Lydia’s Healthy Edibles and other pastries crafted by Kristie Williams.

Beyond serving tasty fare, the Olds prioritize community engagement by hiring locals who live within walking distance of their shops, removing barriers to employment such as transportation challenges. Furthermore, their commitment to education is evident through initiatives like the Muggin Vision Scholarship, which supports students in their transition to college by providing essential supplies and resources.

Tentatively scheduled for a fall 2025 grand opening, Muggin’s North Memphis arrival promises to enrich the local landscape with its inviting atmosphere and delicious offerings. Patrons of the upcoming coffeehouse can anticipate the same commitment to quality, inclusivity, and community that Ken and Mary Olds have become known for.

UPDATE: This article has been updated to include information about the closure of the Whitehaven Muggin Coffeehouse location, which was announced shortly after the initial publication.
