Churrería El Moro, the iconic churro shop that has been open in Mexico City since 1935, is getting ready to open more locations in the United States, with one in Los Angeles opening next year at 1524 Sunset Blvd.
The company, led by CEO Santiago Iriarte, is getting ready to open its second California location in the current home of Patra Burgers on Sunset building in Echo Park, according to Eater Los Angeles. El Moro made its U.S. debut last November when the company opened inside Costa Mesa’s Mercado González. Now, the company is continuing its national expansion with a second site in Echo Park, expected to open in May 2025. Patra will continue to operate in the space until the end of the year.
When Patra exits the building, El Moro will undergo a complete renovation to resemble the iconic churro shop that underwent a rebrand a decade ago under famed designer Nacho Cadena to appeal to a younger audience. The new location will feature all the delicious churro and drink options found at its other locations and an outdoor dining area with free Wi-Fi. Once the Echo Park location opens, Iriarte tells Eater that he wants to continue to expand the brand across the United States, specifically in areas with substantial Mexican populations. The company is considering entering Nevada or Texas next.
“We wanted to bring a traditional brand from Mexico, appealing to people who might’ve visited Mexico City and tried El Moro with their families while downtown,” Iriarte tells Eater LA. “We’re searching for our core nostalgic customer. I want to be the first traditional Mexican [food] brand to go out of Mexico and into the United States. We want to take a business of tradition and take it to the rest of the world.”
