A new neighborhood gastropub is on its way to Brighton‘s Oak Square, and it comes from the duo behind two of Greater Boston’s coziest late-night haunts.

Damian and Candice Dowling—owners of The Abbey in Brookline and Cambridge—will soon open Mo’s Tavern & Kitchen at 575 Washington St, in the former Wildflower Pantry space. Named after both of their mothers—each coincidentally named Maureen, or ‘Mo’ for short—the tavern has been years in the making.

The idea for Mo’s first took root several years ago when the building’s landlord, eager to revive the long-vacant storefront, approached Damian. Although no liquor licenses were available at the time, he believed in the space and signed the lease anyway—supported by a generous rent reduction. This week, after years of holding onto the property, the Dowlings were finally granted a liquor license.

Originally from just outside of Dublin, Damian opened the first Abbey in Brookline’s Washington Square in 2010, followed by a second location in Cambridge’s Porter Square in 2014. Both are known for their elevated takes on New American pub fare, extensive scotch selection, and kitchens that stay open past midnight.

Mo’s will channel that same late-night spirit but with a more casual, family-friendly feel. “Both [Abbey locations] are really neighborhood restaurants more than anything else,” Damian told What Now Boston. “That’s the kind of vibe we want to extend to Mo’s Tavern.”

Open daily for lunch and dinner, Mo’s menu will mirror The Abbey’s eclectic offerings: think steak frites, deviled eggs, burgers, egg rolls, pork belly, and the beloved bison bolognese. There will also be made-to-order kids’ options like organic chicken fingers and hot dogs. “Because once the kids come in, the parents drink,” joked Damian.

The space itself will be bright and welcoming, featuring high ceilings, exposed beams, an open kitchen, and seating for around 70 guests, including a 20-seat bar which Damian describes as “the soul” of the restaurant.

Mo’s Tavern & Kitchen is slated to open in mid-to-late June 2025, with the kitchen staying open until 12:30 a.m. every night.
