Yangban, the celebrated modern Korean restaurant in Los Angeles’ Arts District, has officially closed its doors after three years of operation at 712 S Santa Fe Avenue.

Previously, What Now Los Angeles reported on the award-winning Korean-American restaurant temporarily shutting its doors to undergo a remodel in 2023. Now, it appears owners and chefs Katianna and John Hong are making some more changes. The duo recently announced on social media that they will close on April 16, 2025, stating they are exploring new possibilities. A spokesperson later confirmed with Eater Los Angeles that the Hongs are seeking a new location in another part of Los Angeles.

The Hongs, both former chefs at the three-Michelin-starred Restaurant at Meadowood in Napa Valley, opened Yangban Society in January 2022. The restaurant began as a casual Jewish deli-meets-Korean superette, offering dishes like kimchi pozole and barbecue beef ribs. Over time, it evolved into a more upscale establishment, featuring a tasting menu and a remodeled interior adorned with Korean artwork and crafted decor. Yangban garnered recognition from numerous publications, including positive write-ups from the Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Bon Appétit, and Eater, and received an Eater LA Award for Most Impressive Transformation. While the restaurant has closed its Arts District location, the Hongs are actively seeking a new venue to continue their culinary journey in Los Angeles.

“When we opened Yangban in the heart of the Arts District, it was never just about a restaurant — it was a reflection of our heritage and our journey,” according to the company’s announcement on social media. “Yangban gave us the space to share a new narrative of Korean American identity, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who came through with curiosity and open hearts. Our time in this space was filled with meaningful moments, creative growth, and the unwavering support of our community. While this moment marks a shift, it’s also the beginning of something new. After more than five years in Los Angeles, we’ve had the chance to really live in this city — to explore, connect, and be inspired by the people and places around us. We’ve also had the opportunity to step away, to travel, and to reflect on how we want to grow creatively. We’re in the midst of exploring new possibilities — fresh ideas, new spaces, and thoughtful ways to continue sharing our food and stories. Stay tuned – we can’t wait to share with you what’s next. Thank you for being part of our journey!”
