A new ice cream shop is set to sweeten Boston’s South End.
Uncommon Ice Cream will soon take over the former Lobstah on a Roll space at 537 Columbus Avenue, confirmed husband-and-wife founders Blair Landry and Kady Lane.
The idea for the shop was born during the couple’s honeymoon in Costa Rica. As they visited nearly every ice cream shop on the map, Blair, who had been considering a career change, eventually got the nudge he needed.
“Finally, I asked, ‘Why don’t you do something with ice cream?’” Kady told What Now Boston. By the time they returned home, they had settled on the name Uncommon Ice Cream and purchased a machine to start experimenting with flavors.
From there, the concept took shape around two guiding ideas: honoring Boston’s character and having fun with flavor. So when they found their South End storefront, it felt like a stroke of luck.
“We had hoped for a historic Boston area with a neighborhood feel, and the South End delivers,” explained Kady. “The community, architecture, and delicious restaurant options create the perfect home for Uncommon Ice Cream.”
True to its name, the shop will specialize in high-quality, small-batch ice cream crafted in-house, with a focus on uncommon flavors. Rotating options will include Roasted Banana, Basil and Balsamic Roasted Strawberry, and Cinnamon Cornbread with Blackberry Jam, alongside a handful of tried-and-true classics.
“We hope our customers feel the mix of a classic, high-quality ice cream shop experience and playful modern experimentation,” Kady said.
The shop is expected to open in about a month. For the latest scoop, follow @uncommonicecream on Instagram.
