Construction crews broke ground on a new Mount Pleasant gym, featuring a full range of amenities, including a cafe.
Charleston native and Citadel graduate Joey Welling, who founded Ethos Athletic Club in 2020, plans to open another two-story, 20,000-square-foot fitness hub.
This will be Ethos’ second Charleston-area location, joining the original gym at 311 Huger St.
“Going back 20 years ago and beyond there were no crossfits, barrys bootcamps, or spin studios. People used to go to the gym to take the class. They had a facility to work out whatever discipline they chose. Studying and understanding this history plus spending 21 years now working in the fitness industry from many gyms and studios from Charleston to New York to Atlanta is how Ethos was born. We wanted to bring all of these ingredients together in my hometown of Charleston,” Welling told What Now Charleston.
Habital Form is designing the gym, according to Hospitality Building Services.
The project will transform a 1.06-acre site into a premier fitness facility with an open gym, personal training, and studios for yoga, Pilates and high-intensity classes. Amenities will include outdoor training on both floors, saunas, steam rooms and cold plunges, co-working space, child care and a cafe.
At the original facility, JustFit Kitchen Cafe offers a full-service coffee bar and serves smoothies, protein balls, toasts and grab-and-go fridge items.
Ethos Athletic Club is scheduled to open in late 2026. For updates, visit the gym’s website and follow along on Facebook and Instagram.
