Austin’s favorite Little Mexico Restaurant has announced that it will cease operations by the end of the month. After nearly 40 years in business, the restaurant’s shutdown marks the end of a gathering spot for a generation of diners.
Iconic South Austin Tex-Mex Restaurant Prepares to Close
Founded in 1986, Little Mexico Restaurant quickly became known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere. Traditional Tex-Mex food and a steady crowd of supporters kept it standing strong for years. Founder Rosa Martinez has expanded it into a renowned restaurant over the last 40 years, starting as a small local restaurant.
The restaurant recently announced the closure in a post on its Facebook page. February 28 will mark the restaurant’s final day of service, as Martinez retires. The restaurant wrote, “This decision was not made lightly. Little Mexico has been Rosa’s life’s work, built with love, dedication, and the unwavering commitment of the staff who stood with us through the years. Many became familiar faces, trusted hands, and part of the heart of this restaurant.”
Little Mexico drew diners with a simple, nostalgic menu of breakfast plates, migas, a bowl of salsa, tacos, and its popular house-made tamales. In social media comments, family members and longtime customers described Little Mexico as a core part of their personal and family memories.
The surrounding South First Street corridor has changed significantly over the years, with new development and an evolving restaurant scene. Despite those changes, Little Mexico remained a reliable fixture in the neighborhood.
The restaurant has modified its hours of operation for the final days. Patrons can visit to enjoy classic Mexican food Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 3 pm. Hours for Friday are 7 am to 7 pm, and on weekends, the restaurant closes at 5 pm.
