Kiri Opening Brick-and-Mortar in North Beach

Owners Brian Ishii and Brian Jackson Lee plan to open in early fall 2026

Kiri, a Japanese pop-up restaurant serving Japanese-inspired pub-style dishes, is getting ready to open in San Francisco at 510 Union Street.

The company’s new location will occupy a 2,349-square-foot space that was the former home to Chubby Noodle, according to an Instagram announcement. Owners Brian Ishii and Brian Jackson Lee plan to open in early fall 2026. Customers can expect nostalgic Japanese pub-style dishes, including sashimi, beef teriyaki, and fresh seafood, served in a homelike environment with Japanese knick-knacks and a casual, welcoming atmosphere.

Ishii and Lee met over two years ago while working at the Mission District izakaya Rintaro, where Ishii was sous chef, and Lee was in the front of house, and decided to open a restaurant together. Both are San Francisco natives with family heritages dating back at least five generations. Their goal is to bring authentic, unpretentious Japanese pub food to North Beach, reflecting both Japanese culinary traditions and a personal connection to the city.

Kiri’s menu will blend Japanese influences with simple, nostalgic dishes intended for sharing, alongside beverages like Kiri Kola and root beer. The space is designed to feel like a home away from home, with Motown music playing softly in the background and a layout that encourages casual dining and conversation.

The restaurant is funding part of its buildout through a Kickstarter campaign that supports cosmetic work, kitchen equipment, opening inventory, and other startup costs. The campaign highlights the team’s intention to create a thoughtful, welcoming environment for diners while maintaining authenticity in the food and drink offerings.

With its North Beach location along Union Street, Kiri will join a lively neighborhood known for dining and nightlife. This will be an excellent landing space for Ishii and Lee to launch their vision, offering locals and visitors a nostalgic Japanese pub experience rooted in community and connection.
