Mixed-Use Project Set to Break Ground March 11 in Chinatown, LA

Developers will break ground on ESSENSE 501 on Wednesday, March 11. The mixed-use development in Los Angeles’ Chinatown will bring together housing, on-site healthcare, and community-focused design.

Chinatown’s ESSENSE 501 Project to Break Ground with Cultural Ceremony

ESSENSE 501 is designed by Steinberg Hart and developed by AGI Avant Group and 531 W. College LLC. The project will promote a more holistic approach to health, focusing on community living. Ahead of its permanent opening, ESSENSE 501 will temporarily serve as the Nordic ESSENSE House, hosting events for Nordic nations and brands during the 2028 Summer Olympics.

It will serve as a flagship venue for Nordic nations and brands.  The development will host several events to celebrate its groundbreaking ceremony. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Starting from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, it will be held at 531 West College Street.

The event will begin with opening remarks and a welcome speech at 10:30 AM. The speech will be followed by a project overview at 10:40 AM. At 10:50 AM, guest speakers will take the stage, followed by a Lion Dance performance at 11:10 AM. The event will conclude with the groundbreaking ceremony and photo op at 11:15 AM.

City Leaders and Developers to Attend Groundbreaking

The event will be attended by representatives from the project’s development and design teams, along with several city leaders. Representatives from AGI Avant Group, 531 W. College LLC, and Steinberg Hart will be present at the ceremony.

Among the officials expected to attend the event are California State Assemblyman Mike Fong, Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass, and US Congresswoman Judy Chu. Once completed, ESSENSE 501 is expected to bring a mix of housing and wellness facilities to Los Angeles’ Chinatown.
