The Philadelphia Department of Health conducted several routine inspections on March 23. One of those inspections found Unity Taqueria in violation of health codes, prompting a follow-up inspection.

Unity Taqueria serves Tex-Mex Tacos, Burritos, Nachos, and Queso in the area. According to the report, the violations mentioned are:

  • The facility did not have certified food safety personnel present at all times as required. The report states that a City of Philadelphia Food Safety Certificate application will be provided.
  • Paper towel dispensers at the prep and warewash handwash sinks were found empty. The person in charge provided paper towels during the inspection.
  • The report noted that refried beans were reheated to only 117°F and held in a steam table, instead of reaching the required 165°F for 15 seconds. The item was removed for proper reheating, per the report.
  • Temperature-measuring devices were not available or easily accessible in refrigeration units, preventing proper temperature control.
  • Bulk food containers, including nachos and rice, were not labeled.
  • Food stored in boxes near the dry storage area was not kept at least 6 inches off the floor, according to the report.
An excessive leak was observed at the prep sink faucet.

  • Moist wiping cloths were observed lying on counters instead of being stored in a sanitizing solution. The report mentioned that a spatula was stored between a hand sink and the wall in the warewash area, making it difficult to clean and sanitize.
  • A significant leak was observed at the prep sink faucet.
  • Food residue buildup was noted on the bottom surfaces of an under-counter freezer unit in the dry storage room.
  • A wet mop was left on the floor in the prep area. Floor paint was observed peeling in the warewash room, indicating maintenance issues.

Follow-up Inspection

The facility did not have certified food safety personnel present at all times as required.

The restaurant must obtain a food safety certificate and submit its application and fee within 30 days. Failure to correct the violations may result in license revocation or further legal action, according to the report.
