(a) mar., a new upscale Mexican seafood concept is preparing to make its debut at San Antonio’s Historic Pearl, bringing Oaxacan-inspired flavors and boho elegance to one of the city’s most recognizable culinary destinations.
The restaurant will be located at 403 Pearl Parkway, San Antonio, in the vibrant Pearl district, known for its mix of dining, culture, and hospitality offerings.
While speaking to WhatNow San Antonio, one of the co-owners, Clarece Clavijo, told the publication that the concept was inspired by their trip to Mexico, as they enjoyed the food and experience, and want to incorporate them into the upcoming dining.
“So, bringing the things we loved from Mexico into our home in San Antonio,” said Clarece. She also expressed that the idea came about over a “good dinner.”
Carlos Clavijo, who is also the co-owner, added that the name (a) mar. symbolizes “love” and “connection.” It also reflects the owners’ passion for food and travel. Marc Villarreal, who is also the co-owner, added that the restaurant name also reflects the love between Clarece and Carlos.
The dining experience aims to be “sophisticated” yet “inviting,” promoting a sense of home for guests.
“We are gonna have an elevated experience, and we do want to make sure that everyone who walks through the door feels welcome, and we are trying to instill the same culture with our employees in the restaurant,” Clarece expressed.
She also added that they chose San Antonio because they all live in the city and love the culture.
“The Pearl was the most ideal location, because it is in the heart of San Antonio, and the Pearl does such a great job of bringing in tourists, and it brings in locals, so you get the best of both worlds here,” Clarece stated.
The launch of the restaurant is set for the end of May 2026; however, an exact date has yet to be announced. Customers can look forward to indulging in Latin seafood, including Latin American dishes, according to the owners, who will incorporate an “Asian flair.”
Clarece also added that the restaurant runs a chef residency program every three to four months, bringing in chefs from around the world, such as Latin America, Japan, and Austria, and they are set to use local ingredients.
Villarreal ended by revealing that they partnered with a South African winery, where they will also conduct wine testing at the new restaurant (a) mar.
