After serving generations of diners, the historic Brookville Hotel has closed. The restaurant reopened as Legacy Kansas in partnership with Munson’s Prime Steakhouse. The closure comes amid ongoing financial challenges.

Brookville Hotel Closes Again After 150 Years

On Wednesday, May 6, the Brookville Hotel announced its closure through a Facebook post, citing, “The owners have made the difficult decision to close their doors at this time.” The restaurant was originally established in the 1870s and has been serving the community for more than 150 years.

The restaurant has always been known for its family-style setup and fried chicken dishes. Travelers and locals shared special moments at traditions around Brookville’s table, located at 105 E Lafayette Ave in Abilene.

Managers Veronica and Jeff Higgins confirmed the closure. They said the decision was made by the owners as operating the restaurant became increasingly difficult. They thanked the community for their support.

The sudden closure prompted emotional responses from loyal fans of the restaurant. Diners highlighted how the Brookville Hotel has been a part of their outings. One of the patrons appreciated their service, commenting, “Many, many of my generations of wonderful memories treasured there. Thank you for all your diligent services and smiles.”

COVID Closure, Reopening, and Revival Efforts

The Brookville Hotel was famous for its skillet fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, cream style corn, biscuits, coleslaw, preserves, and homemade ice cream. It was recognized by the Kansas Sampler Foundation as one of the “8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine” with its traditional dining experience.

A report by The Kansas City Star cited the history of the Brookville Hotel. In 2000, the restaurant moved from Brookville to Abilene. It was a popular destination for both locals and tourists near Interstate 70.

The business struggled during COVID-19. In 2020, it closed permanently due to a significant reduction in customer numbers and the ongoing uncertainty in the restaurant industry.

In 2022, the Brookville Hotel was reopened in partnership with the Munson family under the name Legacy Kansas: Munson’s Prime & Brookville Hotel. The revival included many of the restaurant’s signature items, like its famous fried chicken dinners and family-style service. Steaks and Angus beef from the Munson family’s cattle operation were also added.

Reopening was viewed as a way to maintain one of the most recognizable restaurant traditions in Kansas.

The closure of Brookville Hotel ended the journey of one of Kansas’ most historic dining establishments. For many patrons, the experiences of Brookville’s world-renowned fried chicken dinners and decades of service will be remembered long after the restaurant’s closure.
