After 15 years at 25 School St in downtown Boston, beloved nightlife staple Scholars American Bistro & Cocktail Lounge will officially close this weekend, the business announced yesterday on Instagram. But the space won’t stay quiet for long.
A new concept called Off The Rails is slated to take its place in late summer 2026, marking the second location for the Worcester-based hotspot. Owned by Cliff Rucker and managed by partner Chris Besaw, the venue is known for its high-energy nightlife, live music, and themed events. The kitchen serves Nashville-inspired fare, dishing out options like chicken & waffles, barbecue platters, and other Southern-style comfort favorites.
“While it’s certainly bittersweet to say goodbye to Scholars as people have known it, we’re extremely excited for what’s next,” a representative for Off the Rails told What Now Boston in an email. “Off The Rails Boston will bring a completely reimagined experience to the space — combining live music, nightlife, elevated Americana-inspired food and drinks, and a high-energy atmosphere inspired by Nashville and Boston culture alike.”
The upcoming venue will feature a fully upgraded performance space equipped with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, along with expanded entertainment programming, including DJs and live bands. The space itself is also expected to receive a full redesign ahead of the opening.
“Our goal is to create something unique for both longtime guests and a new generation of Boston nightlife and live music fans,” said the representative. Additional details, renderings, and opening announcements for Off The Rails Boston are expected to be released in the coming months.
A favorite among college students, Scholars is celebrated for its upscale pub food, upbeat weekend DJ nights, and karaoke Tuesdays. The venue’s last hurrah will take place this weekend, May 15 and 16, with “One Last Friday” and “One Last Saturday” serving as farewell celebrations before renovations begin for the new concept.
