Perennial ice cream favorite Häagen-Dazs is opening a new location in Wynwood.
Bongo Creamery Wynwood just filed permit applications with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation to open a Häagen-Dazs at 50 NW 24th Street, Unit 104. That puts the ice cream shop right in the heart of Miami’s bustling artistic neighborhood of Wynwood. An opening date has not been announced.
Although the name Häagen-Dazs sounds like an old-school Swedish or Danish name, the brand was actually founded in the Bronx by Polish immigrants Reuben and Rose Mattus. They made up the name to have it sound like an “old-world” quality legacy brand.
The ice cream is a premium product and continues to be one of the best-selling ice creams in the world due to its high butterfat and low air content. The brand started with just three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee. Now, there are dozens of choices, with rum raisin continuing to be one of its most popular.
The first retail Häagen-Dazs ice cream shop opened in Brooklyn in 1976. The company was sold to Pillsbury in 1983, and is now operated by Froneri (a Nestlé company) within the U.S. In the U.S. alone, there are more than 200 shops, with about 400 locations worldwide.
