Philadelphia Pizza Spot Cited for Health Code Violations During Inspection

Angelo’s Restaurant and Pizzeria was flagged for improper storage of food and insect activity.

A routine health inspection was conducted at Angelo’s Restaurant and Pizzeria on June 3 by the Philadelphia Department of Health. The official inspection report identified multiple health code violations, including old mouse droppings, insect activity, and unsanitary conditions of the facility.

Where: 11036 Rennard St #39, Philadelphia, PA 19116, United States

Angelo’s Restaurant and Pizzeria is a casual and traditional Italian restaurant. According to the inspection report, the violations included:

  • The report found containers stored in the handwashing sink. The PIC was instructed to remove the containers from the sink.
  • Uncovered raw chicken was stored inside the undercounter of the refrigerator.
  • Several working containers were also stored inside the mop sink in the food preparation area. The PIC was advised to remove the items and clear the sink.
  • The report also stated that the chlorine concentration in the sanitizing solution of the 3-bay ware wash sink was low. It was measured at 10 ppm, instead of the required 50-100 ppm. Staff was advised to increase the solution in the warewashing sink during the inspection.
  • Several potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat foods that were prepared in the restaurant were stored for more than 48 hours. The food items were not labeled. The report instructed the staff to properly mark the food items immediately.
  • Working containers in the food prep area were being used to store chemicals and were not marked with the common name of the chemical. The staff was told to label the chemical bottles.
  • The report found two flies in the back area near the restaurant’s exit door.
  • The outer opening in the food facility did not prevent the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals. During the inspection, the front and back doors of the facility were left open. The report advised the PIC to close the doors.

  • The restaurant was using soda crates to elevate food in the restaurant, and moist wiping cloths were lying on counters instead of being stored in a sanitizing solution.
  • A food employee was not wearing proper hair restraints, like nets, hats, or beard restraints.
  • Multiple kitchen equipment like knives or cleavers, were stored between table edges and could not be easily cleaned and sanitized.
  • The cutting boards also had deep scratches and scoring marks, which did not allow for effective cleaning and sanitizing.
  • The restaurant staff was using aluminum foil on the gas line under the exhaust hood. A raw wooden shelf was also kept elevating beverages in the back area of the restaurant.
  • A broken kick plate was left on a reach-in refrigerator. The restaurant was also using a non-NSF-approved blender in the food prep area.
  • A coffee machine for the staff was also noted in the food prep area. The report also noted a broken walk-in cooler handle in the food prep area.
  • Brooms were found on the direct floor surfaces in the utility closet and were not hung properly.
  • The inspection found old mouse droppings in the rear storage area near the chest freezer.
  • The restaurant also had stained and greasy ceiling tiles in the prep area and the warewashing area. Accumulated debris on the floor surface was noted throughout the food prep area.
  • Ceiling tiles over the pizza oven and the front prep area had holes, and the walls of the restaurant’s rear area had chipped paint.
  • The front service area had dim lighting.

Following the inspection on June 3, the health department identified several major health and safety code violations. The restaurant is required to correct all the violations before requesting reinspection. A follow-up inspection will be conducted to verify compliance.
