A defunct Maryland Macy’s is getting a new purpose, one certain to inspire enthusiasm in local shoppers. Whole Foods Market was recently announced as part of phase 3 of the Harford Mall redevelopment project, pending planning commission approval, reports BRN.

Construction will turn the one-time Macy’s into a mixed-use development, comprised of five buildings. Whole Foods will occupy the largest space, spanning 35,600 square feet.

Bel Air shoppers are going to need to exercise some patience; the beloved grocery store is still in the early stages of development. Phase 3 plans are being presented to the planning commission for approval in July. If all goes according to plan, Whole Foods may be ready for customers as early as spring of 2028.

Founded in 1980 and currently owned by Amazon, Whole Foods has become one of the heaviest hitters in retail grocery shopping. The chain is sure to be embraced by Bel Air as it continues its mission to: “seek out the finest natural and organic foods available, maintain the strictest quality standards in the industry, and have an unshakeable commitment to sustainable agriculture.”
