Frank’s Beer Shop may be preparing for its next phase of growth in Charlotte, according to recently filed permit documents reviewed by WhatNow Charlotte.
A permit application submitted for the business at 3348 Commonwealth Avenue describes an “existing business expanding into adjacent space” and identifies the proposed establishment type as a “Bar/Coffee Shop.” The filing suggests the popular neighborhood destination is looking to broaden its footprint and offerings through the expansion.
While permit records do not provide extensive details regarding the project’s scope, timeline, or anticipated opening date, the plans appear consistent with comments owner Joe Smaldone recently made about the business’s future.
In a profile published earlier this year by Queen City Nerve, Smaldone teased a partnership with Charlotte-based Enderly Coffee and discussed preparations for longer operating hours. The publication noted that Frank’s Beer Shop was preparing for “longer days” as the owner explored the coffee collaboration, a move that appears to align with the newly filed permit.
The application lists the project address as 3348 Commonwealth Avenue, the current home of Frank’s Beer Shop. Although the filing references expansion into adjacent space, permit addresses commonly remain unchanged when an existing tenant absorbs neighboring square footage within the same building.
If approved, the expansion could allow the concept to evolve into an all-day destination, serving coffee in the morning and beverages later into the day. However, details regarding the menu, layout, and operating hours for the proposed coffee component have not yet been announced.
WhatNow Charlotte reached out to owner Joe Smaldone for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
As the project moves through the approval process, the permit filing offers an early glimpse at what could be the next chapter for Frank’s Beer Shop on Commonwealth Avenue.
