A longtime Cambridge favorite is bringing its popular Indian cuisine to downtown Boston‘s Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
The Maharaja is opening a second location inside the Quincy Market Main Hall at 4 South Market Street, reports Wicked Local. The new outpost will mark the restaurant’s first expansion since debuting in Cambridge more than 15 years ago.
“As you know, Faneuil Hall Marketplace is one of Boston’s most iconic destinations, known for featuring the best of Boston,” partner Raj Punjabi shared with What Now Boston. “When we began planning the expansion of The Maharaja brand, we couldn’t imagine a better place to grow, so we’re thrilled that everything came together.”
Founded in Harvard Square in 2011, The Maharaja has built a devoted following with its menu of classic North Indian dishes, serving both a crowd-pleasing all-you-can-eat lunch buffet and a dinner menu.
In addition to its extensive selection of traditional favorites, the restaurant offers a variety of vegan, gluten-sensitive, halal, and Jain options. The Maharaja has even earned praise from actor Casey Affleck, who once called it the “best Indian in the country” during a podcast appearance.
The restaurant’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges, however. After temporarily closing following a fire in 2014, the eatery reopened the next year and has continued welcoming guests to its two-story Cambridge location ever since.
While the flagship restaurant offers a full-service dining experience, the Faneuil Hall location will operate as its fast-casual counterpart, focused exclusively on takeout and delivery. Guests can expect many of The Maharaja’s most popular dishes, such as Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Biryani, Garlic Naan, Vegetable Samosas, and Paneer Tikka.
Punjabi said the team is aiming to launch the new restaurant in mid-August 2026. Once open, The Maharaja will join a growing lineup of new arrivals at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, including Azul Mexican Kitchen, Captain Candy, Iris Galerie, Mona Sweets, Smashed by BRED, and Tree House Brewing Company.
