A longstanding steakhouse in New York is finally bidding farewell to the community. Donohue’s Steak House is closing on June 19 after 76 years in business. The restaurant has seen increased customer traffic since announcing its closure in April.

The closure news of Donohue’s at 845 Lexington Ave surfaced two months back. The establishment experienced huge footfall since the announcement, as it has been in the neighborhood through thick and thin for the last 76 years.

Current owner Maureen Donohue-Peters recently discussed the closure in an interview with News 4 New York. The video highlighted the restaurant’s long journey and resilience through the COVID period. Diners also shared their emotions and grief for losing a local favorite.

Maureen also shared a gratitude note through Donohue’s Steakhouse’s Instagram account. She described the closure as a bittersweet decision and thanked customers and staff for their support over the years. She also noted that the family plans to focus on its Westhampton Beach location.

The restaurant was first established in 1950 in the Upper East Side and has stayed in the same family across three generations. Owner Donohue-Peters and her niece opened a second location called Donohue’s East in Westhampton Beach last summer, which marked the family’s first expansion in decades.

A third location with another niece is also planned on Long Island. Inside the Lexington Ave flagship, the menu has stayed centered on steaks and chops, with sides like creamed spinach and baked potatoes.
